Conmebol has removed the Copa Sudamericana group-stage match between Independiente Petrolero and Botafogo from Bolivia for security reasons. The game had been scheduled for Estadio Olimpico Patria in Sucre, but it will now be played in Asuncion, Paraguay.
The biggest impact is logistical. Instead of facing altitude in Sucre, Botafogo will now play on neutral territory in Paraguay during a decisive week in Group E.
Why Conmebol changed the venue
According to reports published on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the switch was made because of instability in Bolivia, with protests, roadblocks and strike activity affecting the country. The Paraguayan capital is also expected to host other continental matches involving Bolivian clubs listed as the home side in the same round.
O Globo reported the security-driven move, while FogaoNET added that the decision also affects fixtures such as Always Ready vs Mirassol in the Copa Libertadores and Blooming vs Carabobo in the Copa Sudamericana.
What changes for Botafogo
From a football perspective, the most important difference is the disappearance of the altitude factor. Independiente Petrolero were due to host the match in Sucre, where the physical demands usually weigh more heavily on Brazilian visitors. In Asuncion, that part of the challenge is removed and the contest becomes more about technical execution and managing Botafogo’s schedule.
Botafogo enter this stretch of the group stage in a strong position. They beat Independiente Petrolero 3-0 at Nilton Santos in the first meeting and remained top of Group E. Another away win would leave the team in an excellent spot to chase direct qualification.

The move to another country has already been reported, but final operational details such as the exact stadium in Asuncion and any kickoff adjustment still need to be confirmed through Conmebol’s official channels.
